EPSG:4326 is WGS 84 — the geographic coordinate system used by GPS receivers, GeoJSON, KML, and virtually all data exchange on the web. Coordinates are latitude and longitude in decimal degrees. When someone hands you "lat/long" with no other information, it is almost always EPSG:4326.
One detail trips people up constantly: the official EPSG axis order is latitude first, longitude second, but most software (GeoJSON, PostGIS text formats, most JavaScript libraries) writes longitude first. If your points land in the ocean off the coast of Somalia when they should be in the US, the axes are swapped.

Frequently asked questions
Is EPSG:4326 the same as WGS 84?
For practical purposes, yes. WGS 84 is the datum (the model of the Earth); EPSG:4326 is the identifier for the 2D geographic coordinate system built on that datum, with coordinates in decimal degrees. GPS positions, GeoJSON files, and KML files are all EPSG:4326.
Is EPSG:4326 in latitude/longitude or longitude/latitude order?
The EPSG registry defines the order as latitude, longitude — but most file formats and libraries (GeoJSON, Shapely, most web APIs) use longitude, latitude. Always check what your software expects. A point that plots in Antarctica or the wrong hemisphere usually means the order is flipped.
Can I measure distances or areas directly in EPSG:4326?
Not with plain Euclidean math — a degree of longitude shrinks as you move away from the equator, so distances computed on raw degree values are wrong. Either use geodesic formulas (haversine/Vincenty) or reproject to a suitable projected CRS (a UTM zone, or an equal-area projection for areas) first.
What is the difference between EPSG:4326 and EPSG:3857?
EPSG:4326 is geographic — longitude/latitude in degrees on the ellipsoid. EPSG:3857 (Web Mercator) is projected — flat X/Y in metres, used by web map tiles. Data is usually stored in 4326 and rendered on tiles in 3857.
