About This OpenStreetMap Download Tool
This free browser-based tool lets you download geospatial data directly from OpenStreetMap using the Overpass API. Draw a bounding box on the map, choose a data type, and export the results as GeoJSON — no account, installation, or server upload required. All processing happens in your browser.
Available Data Types
Roads & Highways
Download motorways, trunk roads, residential streets, paths, and cycleways. Useful for transportation analysis, routing networks, and urban planning.
Building Footprints
Extract building outlines including residential, commercial, and industrial structures. Ideal for urban density studies and 3D city modeling.
Waterways
Rivers, streams, canals, and drainage ditches. Essential for hydrology research, flood risk assessment, and environmental mapping.
Railways
Rail lines, stations, and light rail networks. Useful for transit planning, infrastructure mapping, and accessibility analysis.
Land Use
Parks, forests, residential zones, commercial areas, and farmland. Key data for zoning analysis and land cover classification.
Amenities
Schools, hospitals, restaurants, shops, and public services. Commonly used for points-of-interest analysis and service area mapping.
Natural Features
Water bodies, forests, coastlines, peaks, and wetlands. Important for environmental studies and terrain analysis.
Power Infrastructure
Power lines, substations, and generators. Valuable for energy grid mapping and infrastructure resilience planning.
How It Works
- Select an area — Use Shift + drag on the map to draw a bounding box around your area of interest.
- Choose a data type — Pick from roads, buildings, waterways, railways, land use, amenities, natural features, or power infrastructure.
- Download — Click the download button to fetch data from the Overpass API. Preview the results on the map, then save as GeoJSON.
Output Format
Data is exported as GeoJSON, a widely supported open standard for geospatial data. GeoJSON files can be opened in QGIS, ArcGIS, Mapbox, Leaflet, Google Earth, and many other GIS tools. You can also use QuickMapTools to convert GeoJSON to Shapefile, convert GeoJSON to KML, or visualize GeoJSON on a map.
