GML to DWG Converter
Convert GML for AutoCAD and other CAD software — via DXF, the format that opens everywhere.
DWG can’t be generated in a browser — convert to DXF instead (it’s a one-step Save As away from DWG)
DWG is Autodesk’s proprietary binary format. DXF is Autodesk’s own open interchange format and opens natively in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, Civil 3D, and LibreCAD. Convert your GML to DXF below, then in your CAD app choose File → Save As → AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg). No upload, no signup, nothing leaves your device.
🔒 All processing happens locally in your browser. Your files never leave your device.
How to get a DWG from your GML file
- Convert your
GMLto DXF using the tool above and download the.dxffile. - Open the DXF in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, Civil 3D, and LibreCAD — DXF opens natively, no import wizard needed.
- Choose File → Save As → AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg). Your drawing is now a DWG.

DXF vs DWG — what’s the difference?
DWG is the compact binary format AutoCAD uses to store drawings internally. DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is the ASCII interchange format Autodesk publishes so other software can read and write the same geometry. For getting GML data into CAD, DXF is the universal bridge — it carries the same lines, arcs, text, and layers, and every major CAD package converts it to DWG on save.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert GML directly to DWG?
Not in the browser. DWG is Autodesk’s proprietary binary format, and creating a valid DWG requires Autodesk’s RealDWG or the Open Design Alliance (ODA) libraries, which can’t run client-side. The standard, lossless route is to convert to DXF — Autodesk’s own open interchange format — and let your CAD application write the DWG.
Will the DXF open in AutoCAD?
Yes. DXF is Autodesk’s published interchange format and opens natively in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, Civil 3D, and LibreCAD. Once open, use File → Save As → AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg) to get a DWG — it takes one step and no extra software.
Is DXF as good as DWG?
For moving geometry between tools, yes. DXF carries the same lines, polylines, arcs, text, and layers as DWG; DWG is just the compact binary form AutoCAD uses internally. For GIS-to-CAD handoff, DXF is the standard exchange format and loses nothing important.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with GDAL compiled to WebAssembly — your file never leaves your device. That matters for survey data, site plans, and anything under an NDA.
